Ear Tucking (Otoplasty)

What is Otoplasty – Ear Reconstruction Surgery?

Otoplasty, or ear reconstruction surgery, is a procedure offered at our Kirkland, Washington office for patients who want to change the shape, position, and size of their ear(s). There could be various reasons why someone would seek an otoplasty, but the most common is when the ears stick out too far from the head, making them appear much larger. This surgery can be performed on one or both ears.

The Procedure

Adults usually undergo an Otoplasty under mild sedation and local anesthesia. During an otoplasty for protruding ears, the doctor will carefully perform small incisions and restructure the ear cartilage to be positioned closer to the head. Then sutures are administered to maintain this new placement, which leads to the appearance of a smaller ear. The procedure is simple and brief and the results are lifelong.

The Recovery

The incision(s) are hidden behind the ear in the crease. Some patients experience mild bruising and swelling around the ear. Discomfort is easily controlled with pain medication after your procedure. Recovery is rapid and it is always important to follow Dr. Partington’s instructions to ensure the best results for your otoplasty.
