Rosacea / Acne Treatments
Rosacea and acne are two common skin concerns that can be difficult to manage on your own. At Partington Plastic Surgery and Laser Center, we offer a number of effective noninvasive treatments to effectively improve your specific concerns. The Sciton BBL (broad band light) system is one popular treatment option that can treat both rosacea and acne as well as other common skin concerns.
What Causes Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes inflammation and redness, most commonly on the face. the condition can sometimes be mistaken for acne because of the red bumps it causes. The exact cause of rosacea is not entirely understood, however, the condition affects fair-skinned individuals more frequently and can be worsened by certain environmental triggers. While rosacea cannot be cured entirely, treatments can help manage the condition.
What Causes Acne?
Everyone has experienced an acne breakout at some point in their lives. Acne is a result of clogged pores caused by excess oil, dirt, and dead skin cells. Acne is worsened by hormonal changes with puberty, poor diet, stress, or just by naturally acne-prone or oily skin. Many individuals can control their acne breakouts at home, but others may need professional treatments to control its appearance and avoid scarring.
How are Rosacea and Acne Treated?
The Sciton BBL system can effectively improve the appearance of rosacea and acne as well as other common skin concerns such as:
- Age and sun spots
- Freckles
- Small broken blood vessels
- Fine lines
The light energy delivered by the BBL handpiece will heat deep layers of skin to stimulate new cell growth and collage production, leading to clearer, smoother, and healthier-looking skin. Melanin and blood vessels that are present under the skin will be absorbed by the BBL energy and will be diminished. Patients report a light zapping sensation as the light energy is delivered, however, numbing cream can be applied before treatment to maximize comfort. The treatment process typically takes under 30 minutes to complete.
What to Expect After Treatment
There is little downtime after treatment with BBL, however, patients can expect some redness in the days following. Light peeling can be expected in about 1-2 weeks as the damages skin cells are removed, revealing new, smoother skin beneath. Patients will be provided with after-care skin products to protect the new skin as it heals. Sun exposure should be avoided and sun protection should be worn following treatment.
While one treatment session can show results, several spaced-out sessions with BBL are typically required for optimal improvements. One of our laser treatment professionals will meet with you to determine how many treatments you can expect based on your concerns.
